Manuel Antonio was established as a national park on November 15, 1972. Its land area covers 1,983 hectares and its marine area 55,000 hectares. Its main objectives are conservation, research, and ecotourism.
It is located 157 km south of San José or 7 km south of Quepos, depending on your starting point. Access is quite convenient thanks to the good road conditions, and it is easily reached by car or public transportation. There is also a national airstrip in Quepos, just 7 km away.
Near this place there are several white sand beaches surrounded by lush flora, where you can enjoy various activities such as swimming, hiking along trails in the Manuel Antonio National Park itself, surfing or watching the beautiful sunsets.
Manuel Antonio boasts a rich biodiversity, both on land and in the sea, with stunning coral reefs where you can see species like manta rays, angelfish, and sea urchins. It’s also one of the few places in Costa Rica where you can spot all four types of monkeys: spider monkeys, howler monkeys, white-faced capuchins, and squirrel monkeys. Other species that can be observed include coatis, raccoons, and sloths, both inside and outside the national park.
